AstraZeneca has signed a new agreement with GSK for a $35 million investment in its heartburn treatment Nexium.
Nexium was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in March, and the US drugmaker will now seek approval from the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in December.
GSK is now seeking a cash payment of up to $70 million, or $30 million for each Nexium tablet, based on the terms of the agreement.
GSK will also contribute $10 million for the US pharmaceutical firm to the deal, which will be financed by AstraZeneca. The company is also looking into other avenues for the company to expand its commercial operations in the US, including the US sale of its rights to the drug in Japan and the U. sale of the company's rights in Australia.
The US Nexium deal is yet to be confirmed. AstraZeneca is still seeking a cash payment of $50 million for its acquisition of its Nexium business, with a possible $30 million payment in the US, or $10 million for each tablet.
As part of the agreement, the company will acquire the Nexium brand from AstraZeneca. AstraZeneca's global rights in Nexium, the company's generic version of Prilosec, have already been acquired by GSK, as GSK is expected to sell the drug to GSK in the United States.
